NEW IBERIA (KADN/KLAF) -- A man was shot and critically wounded Thursday in New Iberia.
It happened in the 1000 block of South Iberia Street.
Those who live in the area tell News 15 that the 18-year-old victim was walking down the street when he was shot.
A resident tells News 15 that she found him lying wounded in the street - and pulled him into a nearby yard.
That's where her military medic son-in-law treated the victim's wounds, until an ambulance arrived.
"We heard about three or four gunshots, and we all ran to the front to see, because it was right in front of the house. Sure enough, there was a guy lying on the ground. My brother said he saw two people running away from the scene in different directions, and our son in law came out; we helped the guy out of the street and put him on the lawn here, and I applied pressure with a towel. He had a gunshot wound to his back, I reassured him not to move, that we would help him until the paramedics got here. He wanted us to call the ambulance, he was afraid," neighborhood resident Ruby Lopez said.
New Iberia police say the victim is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Investigators say they're working to try and identify the shooter or shooters in this case
