Combat Vets Retreat

A Non Profit has been set up to give Combat Vets an opportunity to spend time with family and unplug from the hustle of every day life.

Lafayette, LA-(KADN) As our nation celebrates the 4th of July, we are reminded that our country was founded on a document called the Constitution which provides " Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness for every citizen.

Many veterans have dedicated years of their lives to protect the freedoms we all enjoy.

One family in appreciation for the service of our vets has a heart to give back to those who have sacrificed for our freedoms.

Melissa Grimes is originally from Delcambre, and her husband Chris is a Navy Veteran. They decided to move to Chris's family farm home in rural West Virginia. After inviting fellow veterans out to their farm they realized it was time to start the Mountain Cajun Getaway. "My command recognized the value of the family unit. They realized that when we worked we were always on call." We started inviting my fellow brothers out and their families and they loved it," says Chris.

Chris says considering what combat veterans go through during their time of service, Mountain Cajun Getaway allows them to just enjoy the simple life with those they love most.

"Just sitting at the dining room table and eating a meal was very important to them. It's not Disney World but they would rather go hike or pick vegetables out of the garden," says Chris.

The Grimes say for those vets and their families who want to get out and about there are plenty of activities to do. "Swimming in the Potomac River swimming holes everywhere. Lots of hiking trails, biking trails, some families just enjoy playing cards at home or doing stuff in the yard and not being connected to the internet, " says Melissa. "Trout fishing is big here. If they have children we can go to a pay pound where you just throw a hook on a line and catch one," says Chris.
