Youngsville - If you’re looking to improve your marksmanship skills when it comes to self-defense, you’re in luck.

One local firing range combines safe firearms safety with a little competitive fun.

Sentry Defense holds shooting competitions every week where you can come out and test your skills against some of the best in the nation.

"One of the stages from tonight goes to USPSA and gets classified nationally," said the owner of Sentry Defense Brandon Elia

Marksman of all ages can participate in the nationally recognized United States Practical Shooting Association course which puts your speed and accuracy to the test.

"So, it entails a certain carbo target and it’s scored differently. There’s five, three and one point on the target," Elias said when explaining the competition. "So, what you do is, you run a course of fire. You might start in a certain box and have to run to another box to shoot different targets."

Your total points are then divided by your time to give you your score.

15-year-old Collin Allemond has been competing in these weekly competitions since he was 12. He said his favorite part about competing is the camaraderie.

"The family. It’s all about family over here," he said. "There more than just a shooting group. They’re my second family basically."

Proper safety is the most important rule of handling firearms which is why Nick Allemond entered his son into competitions at a young age.

"Safety comes first. Period, plain and simple. Even at a young age," Nick Allemond said. "I think that’s where society is messing up. Society is scared of guns, so they don’t know about them, so they’re scared of them. They don’t want to take that chance to learn."

For Collin he’s glad to have started at a young age adding that his accuracy has improved the most.

"You’re shooting on the move. So, shooting on the move and improve your accuracy and marksmanship because you’re focusing on your sights while moving," he said.

Anyone age 12 and up can participate in the weekly competitions. Visit the Sentry Defense Facebook page for more information.
