KEITHVILLE, La., July 14, 2020 – Chimp Haven, the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary just 30 miles outside of Shreveport, Louisiana, is announcing a sweet celebration for World Chimpanzee Day on July 14. The sanctuary received a generous donation match from their partners at Endangered Species Chocolate. Those who donate to Chimp Haven will see their contribution matched up to $12,000, will be entered to win a year’s worth of chocolate and will be directly supporting the care of current and future chimpanzees.

“As the national chimpanzee sanctuary, we’re committed to providing the best care and retirement possible for chimpanzees formerly used in medical research,” said Chimp Haven President and CEO Rana Smith. “On World Chimpanzee Day, we continue working toward our goal to complete our expansion to welcome more former research chimps awaiting retirement. While we do so, we’re thrilled to work once again with Endangered Species Chocolate to support the care of our current and future chimpanzees.”

Chimp Haven is diligently working to complete the expansion which includes development of new forested habitats, open-air corrals and veterinary suites to accommodate chimpanzees retired from medical research still awaiting transition to sanctuary. On July 14, Chimp Haven will hold a giveaway on their Instagram account for followers to enter to win chocolate and a gift card to Chimp Haven’s merchandise store.

World Chimpanzee Day, which marks the anniversary of Dr. Jane Goodall’s first step on what is now Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania, encourages the celebration of humans’ closest relative and raises awareness of the threats the endangered species faces in the wild. This year’s celebration takes place in a time of uncertainty, but one thing remains steady: Chimp Haven’s dedication to providing the most comfortable retirement possible for their residents. Chimp Haven continues to support chimpanzees retired from biomedical research and works to gather donations to welcome even more to the sanctuary.
