Why Pipes Freeze in the Winter

Talking about why pipes freeze due to cold air in the winter.

We are expecting some very cold weather this week here across Acadiana. daytime highs will be pretty chilly but it's those overnight lows that will be close to freezing for multiple nights in a row.

Now, normally when we see this type of weather well we always talk about pipes bursting. But, why is that? Well, let's break down why cold weather affects your pipes.

It all has to do with the surrounding air. When overnight temperatures get to or just below freezing they cool down your pipes. This might not sound like an issue but, pipes are most often found towards the exterior of your house. If those pipes get cold enough well that liquid water could turn into ice. If you've ever left the can of soda in a car overnight when it's cold enough, you might wake up the next morning and see that soda had gotten everywhere. Well, this is also the reason why your pipes burst, when water freezes it expands.

Of course, there are many ways to prepare your house against the colder weather. Some of these can be leaving your faucet on overnight or covering up your spigots. while some homes might be unaffected by these colder temperatures it really comes down to the individual house and how its pipes will react to these colder temperatures.
