We have seen a lot of named storms but what happens when we run out? Well, this happened before so we have a plan for if we run out of names.
So far in 2020, we have seen 17 named storms. Of these, 5 have been hurricanes and 1 a major hurricane. We only 4 names left but still quite a bit of the tropical season remaining so it is very likely we will need more names. Once the current list is exhausted we will move to the Greek Alphabet. Any storms after Wilfred will be as follows:
- Alpha
- Beta
- Gamma
- Delta
- Epsilon
- Zeta
- Eta
- Theta
- Iota
- Kappa
- Lambda
- Mu
- Nu
- Xi
- Omicron
- Pi
- Rho
- Sigma
- Tau
- Upsilon
- Phi
- Chi
- Psi
- Omega

For those wondering how this year stacks up against the last time we used these names, there are some differences. 2005 was the most active tropical season with 27 named storms. This season went all the way to Zeta. As of right now, there have been 17 named storms which is the same amount 2005 saw through September. To keep up with the record pace there will need to see a very active October.
