(ABBEVILLE, LA) Superintendent Thomas Byler announced to the Vermilion Parish School
Board that the Vermilion Parish School System offices and schools will be closed at 11:00 a.m. on
Monday, August 24, 2020, for the remainder of the week. Due to this situation, the start of the
Vermilion Parish school year will be pushed back one week until Thursday, September 3, 2020. We
will use the same Thursday and Friday schedule that was originally in place, just one week later. The
inability to complete COVID preparations, the delay in delivery of goods, and the possible uses of
buses for mandatory evacuations played a role in this decision, but safety is our top priority. The
Vermilion Parish School System wants everyone to take precautions for a possible direct hit and/or
large storm surge from Tropical Storm Laura. In addition, it’s not certain what Hurricane Marco will
do in the days preceding Laura. The Vermilion Parish School System offices and schools are scheduled
to be open on Monday, August 31, 2020, and we hope to finalize our preparations for our Strong Start
2020 plan.
