Suspect Identified Following Officer Involved Shooting in Abbeville.

UPDATE 3/4/2021 11:37AM- Abbevill, La - According to Trooper Thomas Gossen of the Louisiana State Police, the suspect in Wednesday March 3, 2021 officer involved shooting is being identified as 41 year old Dwight Brown. 


UPDATE:  Abbeville – Shortly before 12:30 p.m. on March 3, 2021, Louisiana State Police was requested by the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office to assist with a shooting incident involving one of their deputies. The shooting occurred in the 1300 block of Greene Avenue in Abbeville. Detectives assigned to the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations are investigating the incident.

The initial investigation by detectives shows that the deputy was attempting to serve an order of protective custody within the city limits of Abbeville with assistance from the Abbeville Police Department. Shortly after arrival, the deputy and officers came under fire from the suspect and took cover at a patrol vehicle. The deputy was then struck by one of the shots from the suspect. As the suspect stood in the roadway aiming a rifle at the deputy and officers, the deputy returned fire striking and fatally wounding the suspect. The deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab is processing the scene. This is an active investigation and updates will be released as they become available.


ABBEVILLE, La. (KADN/KLAF) - One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Vermilion Parish.

News15 crews on the scene say a body remains at the scene, covered by a tent, while investigators process the scene.

According to officials with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office, a deputy and victim have been shot in Abbeville on the corner of Greene and Schlessinger Street.

A neighbor and classmate tell News15 the deceased was an Army Veteran that struggled with PTSD.

Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon is confirming that one of his deputies was in fact involved in a shooting sometime around noon today. Sheriff Couvillon advises that Louisiana State Police will be handling the investigation and all updates will come through their office.

The condition of the officer is unknown at this time.

No further information has been provided at this time.
