Acadia Parish – Shortly after 4 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2020, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I were notified of a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 91 near Heith Lane in Acadia Parish. The crash took the life of 49-year-old Chad Joseph Chesterman of Iota.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Chesterman was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette south on LA 91 when, for unknown reasons, he failed to negotiate a curve and his vehicle ran off the roadway. Upon doing so, the Corvette struck a ditch then several small trees, causing Chesterman to be ejected.
Chesterman was not restrained at the time of the crash. He was pronounced deceased by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is unknown and standard toxicology samples were obtained for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers witness, firsthand, the effects crash forces have on motor vehicles and the devastating effects of those forces on the human body. While not all crashes are survivable, proper seat belt usage can greatly increase the chances of surviving a crash by spreading out those forces across the strong bones of the body. Properly worn seat belts also help to keep the occupants of vehicles in their seat and protect the head and spine. Please be a responsible driver or a responsible passenger, and buckle up every ride, every time.
Troop I has investigated 55 fatal crashes resulting in 60 deaths in 2020.
