Traffic Stop Leads to Arrests

Patrol officers of the Abbeville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of N. Lyman Street and E. St. Victor Street.

Abbeville, LA- On July 6, 2020 at approximately 12:28 a.m. patrol officers of the Abbeville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of N. Lyman Street and E. St. Victor Street. The vehicle pulled into a driveway at a residence near the intersection and stopped. As soon as the vehicle stopped, the driver of the vehicle and the passenger attempted to flee the scene in opposite directions on foot. Backup officers were already in the area as the subjects fled on foot.
Officers began chasing both subjects. One of the subjects, identified as Paul Rice of Kaplan, was observed running across N. Lamar Street. Officers identified themselves and advised Mr. Rice to stop running. While running, Mr. Rice fell down in a yard, and started to get back up. Officers observed Mr. Rice reach into his waistband and produce a handgun with an extended magazine. Mr. Rice then attempted to throw the handgun under a residence. Officers were able to then apprehend Mr. Rice.
Officers observed the other subject, identified as Kelvin Davenport of Abbeville, running across N. Lyman Street. As officers were rounding a residence, they heard the sound of what appeared to be tin being moved in a shed behind a residence. Officers located Mr. Davenport within the shed. Mr. Davenport was placed under arrest. Once Mr. Davenport was located, officers located a 9mm handgun in the shed near where Mr. Davenport was arrested. Mr. Davenport was also found to be in possession of marijuana.
An inventory of the vehicle was taken by officers due to the vehicle being towed. Officers located suspected Methamphetamine in the vehicle.
Both subjects were booked into the Abbeville Police Department and later transported to the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center.
Both Mr. Davenport and Mr. Rice was booked on the following charges:
· Resisting an Officer
· Felon in Possession of a Firearm
· Possession of a Firearm within a Firearm Free Zone
· Obstruction of Justice
· Possession of a Firearm in the Presence of a CDS
