Two down, one to go! Library patrons have logged more than 2 million minutes for the 2020 Summer Reading Challenge. The Lafayette Public Library encourages everyone to keep reading to reach a community goal of 3 million minutes read. The end date for the reading challenge has been extended to Saturday, August 15. Readers of all ages can continue to register and log their minutes to earn prizes.

"While we wait for school to begin, we're happy to extend our Summer Reading Challenge. This gives our patrons an opportunity to read for fun and prizes," states Keith Guidry, Community Relations Coordinator. "Reading is important for students to prevent the loss of reading skills, also known as the Summer Slide."

The Library is challenging you, your family, and friends to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to read as well. "One page equals a minute of reading. That means that our community has read a combined total of 2 million pages so far. It's a grand accomplishment! But we're still hoping to top that achievement with a combined total of 3 million minutes read. We believe that Lafayette Parish can reach that goal," states Guidry.

The challenge is simple! Read a total of 600 minutes (or 10 hours), which is the average length of one adult audiobook. Once you've read 600 minutes, stop by any library location to claim a prize pack (while supplies last) and be entered for a grand prize. For more information, visit lafayettepubliclibrary.org/summer<http://lafayettepubliclibrary.org/summer>. Register and log your minutes online at lafayettepubliclibrary.beanstack.org<https://lafayettepubliclibrary.beanstack.org/>.

Prize sponsors include Broussard & David, Chick-fil-A, La Madeleine French Bakery & Café, Parish Ink, Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, Super 1 Foods, Tropical Smoothie, and more.

In addition to the Summer Reading Challenge, the Lafayette Public Library has partnered with Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Athletics for the Ragin' Readers Program. Children, kindergarten through 6th grade, are encouraged to read 600 minutes to earn prizes from Ragin' Cajuns Athletics. Two reading programs means twice the prizes!
