LAFAYETTE - Advances in home recording technology have created a new wave of aspiring music producers. While there are still recording studios in Acadiana who use more old school techniques, more and more artists are electing to go digital.
"With now how you can essentially get similar sounds all for the fraction of the cost in your own bedroom, it's only a matter of time till you start seeing more studios like mine," says Austin Dore', lead producer and engineer at Wave Theory Studios.
Dore' has gone from "bedroom producer" to running his own studio, a place that allows musicians to fine tune their music exactly to their liking.
"When you record as a group, it takes synergy," explains River Gibson, lead singer for the band LVVRS, "You really have to lock in, and this kind of eliminates that. It allows room for perfection."
Perfection is right. Dore' builds layers upon layers of sound, meticulously crafting the vocals for LVVRS single "Backseat Bliss".
Adds Dore' "Layering and having a really powerful arrangement is super important to the way that I record." This attention to detail allows for a full sound in the final product of a song.
"That extra level of care, it goes such a long way," says Gibson, "It helps the creativity and everything. That's something you don't really see at a lot of places."
On more traditional studios, which Dore' says absolutely have a place in the Acadiana market, he adds, "They have a day rate or they have an hourly rate or whatever it is, and then you just feel like there's this clock ticking over your head where. And that's, for productive and creative purposes, that just can't happen."
And yes, even though an amateur musician like myself may have some recording equipment at home, paying for someone who has put in the time to learn the ins and outs of producing is always worth it in the end.
Says Dore', "That experience on how to structure a song, how to handle how your song should progress, arrangement, all that stuff; that's invaluable. So that's really what you're paying for."
