Sheriff Bobby Guidroz and deputies are looking for answers as vehicle burglaries are on the rise in St. Landry parish.
In the past month, vehicle burglaries have increased with 61 vehicles being burglarized since may. Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz says only two of those vehicles were left locked.
“If they feel pretty successful hitting cars that are not secured and locked , they will pull on door handles. If it's locked, they will leave and go to another.” Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz Said.
Four suspects are facing charges. The hunt to find more individuals involved in these vehicle burglaries continues.
''It's hard for us to say that it's the same people. We are encouraging people to make sure they can afford a camera system. Please install camera systems.” Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz Said.
Over 20 thousand dollars worth of items are reported stolen. That includes 22 firearms.
“We are talking about cameras , computers, other valuables that were in vehicles , credit cards that were taken, purses that were taken out of the vehicles. Some cash in many instances. It doesn't take long to add up 61 burglaries and only two not being entered to get the total up to where it is.” Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz Said.
Sheriff Guidroz hopes to put a stop to the vehicle burglaries.
“When people call in , of course there is anger and frustration and I get it because my home was burglarized some years ago. We need them to help take some of the ease out of stealing from them. They have to secure their vehicles. They have to record serial numbers of weapons. They have to record.” Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz Said.
Guidroz is encouraging people to remove all valuable items from their vehicles to reduce the possibility of becoming a target of theft.
