If it wasn't for athletics I wouldn't be where I am today.
The St. Landry Parish School Board met to discuss a variety of topics including the proposed bond expansion for athletic fields and pay raises. Athletic directors from across St. Landry Parish spoke in favor of the bond initiative.
"It's an unfair advantage that these schools have over our students many people may say academics is a priority where money is concerned true but i'll also say athletics keeps a lot of children in school so we can educate them"
The proposed expansion will include new and upgraded athletic fields, pay raises for teachers, staff and new school facilities. Board member Anthony Standberry says education is a necessity.
Everybody that became some type of professional or became anything that's worth something in life went through somebody's classroom and was educated.
There are six schools listed in the proposal for newly upgraded facilities including a pay increase of three thousand dollars for teachers. One mother says her child sees the frustration that his teacher is experiencing and believes they deserve more.
"And these teachers deserve what they are worth, and they are worth more than what we are doing if i can pay them i would pay them that's' just how deeply i feel about it"
Decision was made to continue discussion on the proposal and move the forum to a larger area to include parental and stakeholders involvement.
