Shakespeare Studies Class Enrolling Now

Posted: Aug 18, 2021 5:33 PM

Acting Up (in Acadiana) is offering an online Shakespeare Studies Class for students ages 10 through senior in high school. We are hoping (depending on Covid numbers and vaccination rates) to meet in person several times throughout the year with (hopefully) a small in person Shakespeare Showcase. We will include students that live out of town or state virtually.

Students will learn the differences between Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies, histories. and romances. We will also explore one of his “problem plays” Cymbeline. They will read and compare an early and late Shakespeare comedy: Two Gentlemen of Verona and Twelfth Night. We will read excerpts of Macbeth, Richard III, and The Tempest.

The class is designed for 10-12 students, so capacity is limited. We will meet on Wednesdays from 5-6:30 PM.

We will also do some vocal work, warm-up exercises and improvisation as a fun wrap up of each session.

Students will choose two monologues to develop: one comedic and one dramatic. We will also choose one of the plays and create an abbreviated version to perform at the end of the session.

There is a $50.00 non-refundable registration fee and the class is $70.00 a month (with a $15 facility fee for the occasions that we meet in person). Students will need to be able to print some of their materials. The class will begin on September 15, 2021 and will follow the Lafayette Parish School Schedule. Scholarships are available due to a generous donor.
