Lafayette, LA - Since schools are back to in-person learning with masks and social distancing in place, districts are in need of bus drivers. With the lack of drivers this leaves several parents frustrated on how they'll get their children to and from school.

Lafayette Parish School board President Mary Morrison says at the beginning of the year Lafayette Parish had bus drivers trained and ready to hit their routes, but things didn't go as planned due to how the year has been. "They were ready to get started. they were trained. we trained several bus drivers over the summer,ut due to the pandemic, it caused delays and cancellations"

Several parents like Brandi Romero are faced with the uncertainty of if their child will have transportation to school on a day-to-day basis. " I got a text from my daughter the other day say hey the bus isn't running today and I was like, oh shoot what am I going to do. How am I going to get her from school at this point?"

Morrison says that Lafayette Parish is not the only area facing a bus shortage but wants to reassure parents that they are working tirelessly to have the situation handled properly. "We have bus drivers that are working double routes. We are using every resource that we have, substitute school bus drivers are working as well."

Hairstylist Jennifer Prejean was thinking of becoming a bus driver for the parish after taking the course.

She says taking the course she realized being a bus driver can be tough, especially with all the training that goes into the process. "We had to learn safety. You have to learn every single part of the bus, underneath the bus. the training is intensive.

For some, like Prejean the pay for bus drivers stopped her from becoming one. "The pay is a big issue I believe. You need to pay quality people to do that type of job, and also you're caring children, you're carrying precious cargo."

In the meantime,  Superintendent Morrison wants parents to be reminded that they are using every resource they have to find bus bus drivers and cancellations will be the last resort.

Lafayette Parish School Board recommends that parents send updated information to be notified if their children's school bus is not running. This gives parents a second plan on how they plan to get their children to school.
