LAFAYETTE – Two classes of South Louisiana Community College’s recent Practical Nursing graduates successfully achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) on their first time taking the exam. The two classes include the December 2019 classes from the Lafayette and the Crowley campuses.
For three consecutive years, students in the PN program in Lafayette received 100 percent pass rates. For two years, the students in the PN program in Crowley received 100 percent pass rates. The national average pass rate is 85.63% for first time test-takers, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
“This is a testament to how hard our nursing students work and how dedicated our faculty are to our students’ success,” said Dr. Jeanine Thomas, SLCC’s interim dean of Nursing and Allied Health. “We are committed to training the healthcare workforce in our communities and preparing LPNs for excellence in the industry.” I am extremely proud of the professionalism, competency, and clinical expertise of our all of faculty and I want to recognize the faculty at these two campuses for demonstrating Everyday Excellence in achieving this success. They are Angela Evans, Christy Lemelle, Carolyn Livings-Cluse, Shavondali Cawthorne, Onita Key, Venessa Mouton Stoles, and Allie May.”
According a Gallup Poll released earlier this year, nursing remains number one on the list for the most trusted profession. It has been listed as the number one most trusted profession for 18 consecutive years. The field is expected to increase by 9 percent in the next decade as the baby-boomer population ages, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is faster than average for most occupations. The college operates Practical Nursing programs at seven of its nine campuses.
“Nursing is our calling and we are honored to be called to teach nursing,” said Thomas. “Our faculty and administration recognize this calling and takes the time to ensure that each graduate is a competent, compassionate, caring, and confident nurses prepared to provide holistic healthcare to patients.”
