Retail workers across the nation are drained from the pandemic and are quitting jobs more than ever before.

Lafayette, La (KADN) "We have three in a half million fewer people either working or looking for work today than we did before the pandemic"

Americans are ditching their jobs by the millions and economists believe it's because there are better opportunities avaliable. Gary Wagner is a Acadiana Business Economist Endowed chair at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette and he says, "And so one of the reasons your seeing so many people quitting jobs is because of the plethora of opportunities that are out there to transition into something potentially better"

Economists say the pandemic has made it harder for retail workers to find reliable child care and public transportation.

"Childcare's been a big issue in the pandemic and it's going to continue to be a big issue in the recovery so what we saw is that people who had children whether you were male or female they dropped out of the labor force meaning that they either stopped working or stopped looking for a job at higher rates than individuals who did not have children"

As a former retail worker, Marcel Johnson agrees that he would quit a retail job for a better paying opportunity.

"I have been working on minimum wage since I can remember so yes i will not look or think twice about getting a job with higher paying and benefits as well"
