“4 or 5 is when we actually lost power. I heard it when the neighbor’s tree hit their house.”

During hurricane season it’s not a question of  if you will lose power but a matter of when.

William Hays, of Crowley says,  “We know here as well as anywhere else around the country is that it’s gonna be time before we actually get help in from outside”

Stephanie Wagner with the Red Cross says one of the most important things to have during a disaster is water. "If you lose access to power sometimes you're gonna lose access to water as well or clean water."

Jugs of water can be found at most neighborhood grocery stores.

Other items like plyers, a hammer, or a drill are usually laying around the house.

Now let’s assemble the kit.

Jason nappi, storm track 15 chief meteorologist says,

“You’ll need one gallon of water per person per day. So if the power is out for three days, I’m gonna need three gallons.”

Wagner says it's important to have games for the kids during hurricanes.

"You want to have things that will keep them comfortable and keep them happy as it's kind of traumatic and scary to go through something like this."

But you’re not done yet.

Jason nappi, storm track 15 chief meteorologist says,

Don’t forget to store boxed food in tightly closed metal or plastic containers.

Rethink and replace expired items every year as your family’s needs change.
