Lafayette, La. - The worlds current supply chain crisis is making it hard for retailers to keep items in stock which could make it harder for you to get presents under the tree.

So what are some things people are doing to ensure those special gifts make it off Santa's sleigh in time?

They are starting to do majority of thier shopping online but that comes a special risk, Porch Pirates.

The one downfall? Shopping online means the package comes to your front door step rather than coming straight to you.

"With people ordering so many packages, it's a good opportunity for scammers and just unethical people," said Babin.

Vice President and COO of The Better Business Bureau Chris Babin is talking about Porch Pirates. They're thieves who take packages left outside your home by couriers.

"Just make sure that you know what packages you've ordered, your'e following the tracking information that your'e provided when you order it," said Babin.

"I just started ordering things off of Amazon. I think packages, they get lost all the time and it's important for us to keep track of our own things because your package may get lost or stolen," said Z. Hebert.

Also, The Better Business Bureau says keep a suspicious eye out for phone calls, text or emails telling you, you missed your delivery. If that's the case a real delivery company will leave a notice on your door.

"Maybe have a signature required to where you have to be present in order to recieve it or for some type of shipping insurance before you order it through the shipper. That way you know that you are protected," said Babin.

Residents like Shane Hebert protect themselves by making online purchases with a credit card only.

"I use a credit card, it's more secure. A debit card is attached to a checking account whereas the credit card, it just goes straight as credit and it's ensured," said S. Hebert.

One final tip, when shopping online make sure your'e on a secure web adress that starts with https. That'll tell you that any and all of the information you enter is encrypted and secured.

As you continue to shop online keep in mind that packages can be stolen from apartment and condo complex lobbies.

Now one alternative you can do is have your package delivered to your job or a trusted family member or friend who will be at home when you can't be.
