Broussard, LA - Ochsner Health is partnering with Trax Development to create Safesource Direct LLC; The result - personal protective equipment manufacturing facilities in Acadiana.

"When I think about what we were doing a year ago to find PPE and now we’re here in Acadiana embarking on this new facility to manufacture it right here, I just have to tell you I’m pretty excited about that," said Governor Edwards.

The covid-19 pandemic showed what work is needed across Louisiana. Governor John Bel Edwards says it also exposed the country’s need to bring factory jobs back to America.

"It shined a light on the need for our country to start manufacturing again. Especially when we were trying to source all these materials that you see up here," Edwards said.

Safesource Direct is making a nine figure investment toward the development of two facilities, an 80,000 square foot factory in Lafayette Parish and a 400,000 square foot factory in St. Martin Parish. Both will be responsible for manufacturing PPE.

"Safesource is making a $150,000,000 capital investment. Not only in this greenfield facility but also in a retrofitted existing facility nearby," the governor said.

More than 2,000 new jobs will be created here in Acadiana, something Ochsner president and CEO Warner Thomas says was one of its goals.

"It really is about being able to rely on ourselves and not having to rely on foreign manufacturing and foreign suppliers for personal protective equipment," Thomas said.

Thomas added that "more importantly, we’re going to be producing personal protective equipment that will protect all of our health care workers in the region. Certainly at Ochsner and all of our partners."

The $150,000,000 investment will be broken down with $73 million dollars for the Lafayette Parish facility and the remaining $77 million designated to the St. Martin Parish facility.

Both the Lafayette and St. Martin Parish facilities will have starting salaries of $45,300 and $38,000 respectively along with benefits. Hiring will begin mid-2021.
