Just before 7:00 PM Officers were called to the 200blk of Oleander St. regarding a person who had been shot who was at that residence. Upon arrival officers located one male victim suffering from a single gunshot wound. It was determined that the shooting actual occurred just out of the city limits of Opelousas. The St. Landry Sheriff’s Office was notified and is currently investigating that incident. (Request for additional information should be directed to the SLSO.)
UPDATE 9/7/2020: Decourian Fontenot age 21 of Opelousas was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail for Illegal carrying of weapon, and Attempted Manslaughter. Investigators learned that the shooting occurred as a result of the victim, the suspect’s uncle arguing with and getting into a physical struggle over a firearm that the suspect had in his possession. The weapon discharged striking the victim in the face area. On September 7, 2020 at approximately 9:42 A.M. the victim in this shooting passed away as a result of his injuries. The charges against the suspect will be upgraded to one count of Manslaughter.
At approximately 9:45 PM officers were called to a residence in the 500 blk of Narrow St. regarding the shooting of a male victim who suffered a gunshot wound to the face area. It is believed that the shooting was a result of a disturbance between family members. A suspect in currently being questioned by investigators. The victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. The weapon believed to have been used in the shooting has also been recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
