Opelousas Man Arrested for Attempted Second Degree Murder After a Dispute on Shute Street

Officers responded to the area of Wallior & Emmett St. for a call for shots fired in the area on Monday, August 2, 2021 at about 12:30 P.M . It was later determined that after speaking to a party involved in a dispute that the incident took place in the 600blk of Shute St.

The shooting was a result of the victim in this incident going to a residence in the 600blk of Shute St. to try and locate some alleged stolen property. During this time the suspected shooter who was later identified as Eric Jones pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the victim and struck his vehicle at least once shattering a window before the victim fled, and contacted Police from another location.

It was learned that Jones was also a convicted felon barring him from legally possessing a firearm. Jones was taken into custody and booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail for the following charges:

Eric Don Jones, age 33, Opelousas, LA

Attempted second degree murder
Aggravated criminal damage to property
Felon in possession of a firearm
