One Driver Killed, One Injured in Head-On Crash in St. Landry Parish

Opelousas – Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 71, south of Louisiana Highway 107, in St. Landry Parish Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on December 2, 2021. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 61-year-old Debra A. Wunstel of Alexandria.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2019 Toyota Camry, driven by Rachel Gremillion, was traveling south on US 71. At the same time, a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Wunstel was traveling North on US 71. For reasons still under investigation, Gremillion’s Camry crossed the center line and struck the Cobalt head-on in the northbound lane of travel.

Troopers determined, both, Gremillion and Wunstel were restrained at the time of the crash. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital in critical condition where Wunstel ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
