NEW ROADS, LA - A part of Main Street in New Roads will look a little different on Friday. Employees of the City of New Roads will gather in the parking lot of City Hall Friday, October 16, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. on National Mammogram Day to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness month by painting the parking lot pink.

Employees are encouraged to wear pink to honor and acknowledge survivors, those who have passed, as well as newly diagnosed patients with the disease."Breast cancer remains the second most common cancer among women in the United States and early detection is critical," says Mayor Dukes. "We want to recognize and support individuals in our community who are battling breast cancer. We also want to encourage women and some men to get their annual mammogram screening. It's important for people who are battling this disease to know they are not alone.

One in every eight American women have the risk of being diagnosed with the disease. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, many women have postponed their annual mammogram screening. According to FDA, 40 million mammograms are done in a typical year. "Delayed screening means delayed treatment. The single most important tool is screening," stated Mayor Dukes.

The public is invited to take a photo in the pool of pink and post it on social media with the hashtag #PaintInPinkNR
