Opelousas, LA (KADN) -- Jonquarius McGhee pours in buckets for the Opelousas Tigers. The 6'2'' senior point guard averages 18 point a game, but he started out not making his varsity team in Houston.
"It was kind of tough at times," McGhee said. "I withstood everything and got through the year. If this is what I want to do I can't just let one setback keep me from moving forward to get where I want to get."
Jonquarius moved back to Opelousas for the first time since elementary school and made varsity his sophomore year. Assistsnt coach Alonzo Walker helped him improve his shooting. After being paralzyzed at 19 from a car accident, Walker told him to never letter opportunities slip away.
"I would give everything I have to one more chance to play the game like I used to," Coach Walker said. "He came up to me and was like, 'Coach, I gotta become a better shooter if I am going to college for basketball,' and so every night we would try to put up at least 150 to 200 jumpers."
Jonquarius is Ron Rueben son. Many basketball fans in Opelousas say he's the best in school history, but his son is developing his own identity based on hard work.
"He's just a grinder if there's a basketball bouncing he wants in," Coach Walke said.
"The missed shots actually helped me in a game," McGhee said. When I miss shots I kind of get down on myself. As I work on it and get older I just keep my head up and keep my composure."
Jonquarius earned a scholarship to Nicholls State University next season, but he's ready to dive toward being a hungry freshman all over again.
