Lafayette,LA - There have been at least two fatal motorcyclist accidents in the past month. At first turn here in Scott, I spoke to a motorcycle instructor who says that a road safety course makes riders more knowledgeable.

"Riding a motorcycle is excellent fun. You smell the surroundings, th crops in the field, the flowers. "

First Turn owner Bill Young has been a motorcycle instructor for forty-seven years. He believes that riders will be more prepared on the road after taking a safety course. "There is a lot of things that's different with a motorcycle that a rider needs to learn so he doesn't make a mistake when riding."

Young says motorcycle safety starts with what you're wearing, "Heavy shoes or boots, long pants and shirt preferable a jacket, so that if you were accidental go down it could protect you from serious injury. Goggles, sunglasses are really not the best protection."

Young says motorcycle riders should wear gear all the time, but he said don't wear just any helmet. "It specifically to design to protect you if you have a crash at a high rated speed. A bicycle helmet is not sufficient, it's not designed for crashes.

Matthew LeBlanc says being a motorcycle driver, he's cautious of cars around him. He tries to educate those around him on the importance of watching out for motorcycles.

"You could side swipe them. You always want to stay a couple feet farther back from them, because they can stop alot faster than an autoobile can and you definitely dont want to rear end one.

For those thinking about taking a safety course… there’s several options. The Louisiana state police offers a training course that is only twenty-five dollars. All information can be found at http://www.lsp.org/motorcycle.html
