"The purpose of the memorial day celebration is not just for a three day weekend as you know we have a federal holiday come monday today it's a day that we fellow military veterans remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice"
It was a time to stop and remember at a memorial day ceremony in Lafayette.
Rudy Bourg served over 21 years in the military and believes this is a day to remember fallen soldiers.
"and today for me it's a special day because i remember them because there not here today to remember the others"
Part of those ceremonies... a table set in honor of the fallen. The tradition dates back to the end of the vietnam war. Each item on the p-o-w m-i-a table symbolizes something specific.
"The big symbol is the glass the glass is inverted it represents the fact that they can not be here today to share a toast with us... this chair the chair is empty because there missing and we have to remember them"
The ceremony also focused on the importance of the medal of honor. bourg says this medal is given to those who have gone above and beyond what was expected of them.
"But it's above and beyond the responsibility of one possibly thinking that he's going to lose his life but he's going to do it anyway to take care of his veterans or to serve someone else to come home safe"
