LAFAYETTE, LA (KADN)- You may have noticed long gas lines, packed grocery stores, and heavy traffic today and that’s because many people across Acadiana are preparing for hurricane Ida to make landfall this weekend.

Many locals said that they are not evacuating but instead preparing their homes for whatever the storm may bring.

“I thought about it but I haven't evacuated in 16 years so I'm thinking, I'll take my chances,” Keith Johnson, a local from Opelousas, said.

According to Johnson, it normally floods by his home when there is heavy rain, so he has a long list of items to get to prepare for Hurricane Ida.

“Foods like crackers, maybe chili barbecue, coal, you know different things the kids the power go out, generators inverters charge all my batteries and for the power go out,” he said.

Another local said that she didn’t expect items like bread and water to be hard to find, especially since she just found out about the hurricane yesterday.

“We found about it like yesterday. And so, no time to prepare at all,” Kameryn Bridges said.

Her partner said that he didn’t expect to experience traffic since they live near a grocery store.

“The 55-minute drive, which should only be like five minutes,” Christian Lowry said.

But, one lucky person was able to grab everything on his list because he prepared early in advance.

“You know bud light, maybe a little wine. You know if you have to go by candlelight, you can have some wine or bud light in the bottle,” Shane Wiggins, a local, said.
