On July 25, 2021 deputies with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the intersection of Lilac Road and Highway 167 in the Opelousas area in regards to a black male who was swinging a bat at something in the ditch. The witnesses observed a white male crawling out of the ditch, covered in blood. The black male then drove away in a black jeep, leaving the scene.”
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies spoke with the witnesses. One witness stated that he attempted to follow the jeep but was unsuccessful due to traffic interference. However, he was able to take a picture of the back side of the jeep and license plate before losing sight of the vehicle.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that the victim was walking eastbound on Highway 167 when an older model black jeep stopped on the side of the road. Leon Cassimere, Jr. exited the jeep holding an aluminum bat and yelled, “I’m going to kill you!” Leon Cassimere began striking the victim with the aluminum bat until he fell into the ditch, and then left the area in the vehicle.
When questioned by deputies, Leon Cassimere admitted to being involved in the altercation with the victim that took place on Highway 167. Leon Cassimere stated that the victim stole items from his property on previous occasions and he decided to handle the situation himself.
On July 26, 2021, Leon Cassimere, Jr. was booked at the St. Landry Parish Jail and charged with attempted second degree murder. His bond was set at $75,000.
