LAFAYETTE, LA (KADN)- The average price for unleaded gas across the state is $2.64 and some locals think that this price is too high.

“It’s pretty ridiculous especially with the pandemic going on, a lot of people been getting their hours cut, losing jobs, and things like that so it’s gone be a struggle for a lot of people,” Eugene Lazard said.

According to Triple-A, gas prices have increased by six cents this week alone. Some locals now fear how much gas could cost if the shutdown doesn’t end.

“It might double, so I might spend seven hundred dollars next week just in gas,” Eugene Lazard said.

For the past 24 hours, states like Virginia and North Carolina are seeing fuel shortages with lines stretching for miles but we may not experience that same problem in Louisiana.

“Folks in Louisiana aren't drawing from the pipeline so it doesn't supply, no one is supplied in Louisiana for the most part from this pipeline they are supplied directly from the refineries,” Nathan McBride, a representative from Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association said.

According to McBride, Louisiana doesn't rely on the Colonial Pipeline for fuel because there are many refineries in the state.

“The concern is how do you get the fuel that's being produced here in Louisiana and also in Texas, how do you get that up to the folks who need it along the eastern seaboard,” McBride said.

The Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association is discussing ways to get fuel to states in need.

“So there's a couple of options, one would be to load it on trucks and drive it across multiple states. Another option is to put it on basically ocean-going barges and ship it around Florida to ports along the Atlantic coast,” McBride said.

According to Triple-A, if gas prices do increase nationwide-it will be the highest prices we’ve seen since 2014.
