LAFAYETTE, LA -- Leaders and Organizations around Acadiana are still recognizing Martin Luther King Jr Day despite the covid-19 pandemic.

“The historical perspective of this holiday will never be lost,” State Senator (D-LA) Gerald Boudreaux said.

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Incorporated recognized the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by holding a day of service where they cleaned up the streets of Lafayette. Lionel Blackman, president of the Eta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Incorporated says it’s important to be vigilant right now.

“The pandemic has affected us but we cannot allow that to say okay we are going to wait until this is over with. When this is over with, you don't know where the state where the community is going to be in," Blackman said.

Member of Zeta Xi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Kendrick Johnson feels fortunate to be to able serve on such an important day.

“We need to remain active and continue doing what we are doing, and that's serving the community,” Johnson said.

Boudreaux encourages the community to continue to come together in a time of social unrest, even during a pandemic as we all prepare for a historic inauguration.

“We unite and we prepare for the next four years so that those who have suffered, those who are still suffering from unemployment, from the pandemic, from personal loss, unemployment, tragedies within their lives.. that they can heal," Boudreaux said.

Now local organizations and churches have canceled many of their MLK celebrations due to the pandemic but they've found different ways to recognize his legacy by demonstrating virtual sessions throughout Acadiana.
