Lafayette Native Wins Gold Medal in Men's Pole Vault final

Mondo Duplantis of Lafayette won the gold medal for Sweden in the Men's Pole Vault.

Lafayette, La (KADN) - The Olympics officially opened on Friday, July 23 and eyes were on Lafayette’s very own, Armand “Mondo” Duplantis. 

Duplantis a former LSU star and Lafayette native became the first current or former LSU track and field star to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games in 85 years. Mondo cleared 6.02 meters on his first attempt.

He is also a world record holder, just last year in September Mondo set the world outdoor record at a meet in Rome clearing a height of 6.15 meters.

Duplantis' father is a former American pole vaulter but he chose to compete for Sweden, his mother's born country.

 Soon, we will all be able to see his journey to the Olympics in the documentary Born To Fly.
