This week’s KidLit Pick is “A Library Book for Bear” by Bonny Becker and illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton
This is another sweet book in the Bear and Mouse series where Bear does not want to go to the library. He already has all the books he will ever need and has no interest in visiting the library. Yet the relentless and cheerful Mouse believes that he can convince Bear to go.
After some persuasion, Bear reluctantly agrees to go with his friend to the big library (which he feels is excessive and too extravagant), and now Mouse will have to find the perfect book for Bear to enjoy. Bear and Mouse humorously argue over what books Mouse thinks Bear will enjoy—providing the readers with laughs throughout.
Bear gets grumpier and grumpier as Mouse shows him books about rockets and dancing pickles that he might enjoy, all while reminding him to entreats him to use his quiet voice. But when Bear hears the librarian reading at storytime, he is enchanted by the book reading and discovers a love for the library.
What Author Aly loves:
· Watercolor illustrations perfectly capture the mood and expressions of these unlikely friends.
· Silly and fun conversation by a persistent Mouse and a grouchy bear.
· These characters represent children of all character. We can relate to times we felt like Bear where we had to do something we really did not want to do. And Mouse, where we felt we had to be the strength and strong-arm of the friendship.
· An adoring appreciation of the magic that follows a library visit.
