Kicking to College

One-On-One Kicking

Posted: Oct 2, 2020 5:24 AM

Lafayette, LA (KADN)-- The pandemic canceled his pandemic football league season but Gunnar Raborn is still on the football field. He's the head coach for One-On-One Kicking in Louisiana.  He trains kickers at St. Thomas More his old high school.

"I do this for the love of the game,"  Gunnar said.  "This is what I love to do."

One-On-One kicking trains kickers acorss the nation starting in middle school in kicking and punting. Gunnar was a walk-on kicker at Alabama before transferring for a scholarship at McNeese State in Lake Charles.  He started coaching in kicking seven years ago and wanted to teach others how to kick to give them a formal arena to learn.   His goal is to help every one of his trainees earn a college scholarship.  75-percent of participants in One-On-One kicking earn a scholarship.

"He teaches us alot," Ascension Episcopal kicker Peyton Woodring said.  "He has added so much leg strength and critiqued me alot.  My techniques are much better because of him."

Gunnar's kickers practice three days a week but they never touch tackling.  However, they do have to learn to to tackle the mental battle of knocking through clutch kicks that could decide a win or loss for a football team.

"When they take their steps back the last thing you want to think is what happens if I miss this kick,"  Gunnar said.  "You need to think I am going to make this kick, you need to have positive thoughts."

The winning formula is positive thoughts and great coaching lead to timely execution.
