Teen Killed in Vernon Parish After Tree Falls on Family Home

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards' Chief of Staff confirmed the first fatality as a result of Hurricane Laura Thursday.

According to the governor's office, a 14-year-old girl died when a tree fell on her family's home in Vernon Parish.

According to Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft, the home is in the area of Holton Cemetery Road in the Slagle Community.

VPSO deputies had to utilize chain saws to cut their way into the area of the residence. Upon arrival, they discovered a tree had fallen across a mobile home which resulted in the girl's death.
