(KADN) - Eunice Police have identified two dead victims from what's being described as a shootout last night near the intersection of East Laurel Avenue and Nimitz Street as 58-year-old Chris Jones and 17-year-old Marshall Weston III, both of Eunice.
Chief Randy Fontenot tells News15 that Jones was an innocent bystander "who was in the wrong place at the wrong time" and was either caught in crossfire or surprised the gunmen and was accidentally targeted.
Fontenot adds that he believes Weston, who was dropped off at the hospital by passing bystanders and died of his injuries there, was targeted in the shooting, believed to be gang-related. Fontenot also tells News15 investigators have identified several suspects, most of them juveniles from the Ville Platte, Mamou and Eunice areas, but police are not releasing names at this time.
Officers responded to the intersection of E. Laurel Ave. (US Hwy 190) and Nimitz Street at 7:14 PM on May 5, 2021. Officers located one victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police shortly after received a telephone call from the Acadian Medical Center about a gunshot victim being dropped off at the door to the emergency room. Passengers in a black or dark colored pickup truck placed the victim at the door, banged on the door, then fled from the hospital. This victim was soon after pronounced dead at the hospital.
Two people of interest were apprehended and detained for questioning. Others are being sought. The Eunice City Marshal's Office, St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office, Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office and Mamou Police Department all assisted in the search for the suspects.
This investigation is still very active. Eunice Police are pleading with citizens, if you have any knowledge of any of the shootings, to please report it.
