When a motor vehicle is determined to be a total loss due to water damage the first thing you should do is check your insurance policy. Experts say most insurance doesnt cover water damage for homes or vehicles and waiting until the last minute isn't recommended.

"Check with your insurance company have them work you through the process and then before you make any permanent changes or you spend money or pay a deposit for a contractor or somebody to do the work for you make sure you get everything in writing that way you know exactly what to expect"

Chris Babin, Vice President of the Better Business Bureau says in the event that your vehicle is affected by storm damage it is important to keep documentation such as pictures and videos that are time stamped for insurance purposes.

"Document as much as you can if you have vaulables that are damaged make sure you take pictures of those that you have that and your able to provide it to an insurance company or somebody if they request it"

Here are a few tips that car owners can take to reduce the impact of natural disasters.

Have copies of your insurance policy on hand, discuss your emergency plan ahead of time, take before and after pictures and videos of your car, purchase a glass breaker to keep in your car in case you need to break a window.

During this time of severe weather a lot of people are beginning to fall victim to insurance scams babin says unethical people try to take advantage of people when they're most vulnerable.

"The things to be on the lookout for contractors that just showup on your doorstep telling you that you have damage to your home without having looked at it or contractors who encourage you to pay the full amount for the repairs upfront before they start any work you definitely want to look out for that"

louisiana law states the insurance company acquiring ownership of the vehicle should send an application to the office of motor vehicles within 30 days of settling the claim.
