Lafayette - With the upcoming school year just weeks away and Covid-19 cases continuing to increase, where do things stand with covid protocols within schools?

Mary Morrison says as of right now, Things are going to be very similar to the protocols that were in place last year.

"It’s basically going to look like what we were doing last year," Morrison said. "We’re going to require face masks on all students that ride our school buses, we’ll be practicing social distancing."

Morrison says they still plan for face-to-face learning this year. Adding that there is currently no mandate for wearing a mask on school campuses at this time.

"They’re not mandated to wear the mask indoors at this time and as I said we would hope that they would if you haven’t been vaccinated," said Morrison.

She says however that classroom sizes will be reduced in an effort to keep students apart from each other.

"We’ll be meeting in smaller groups, sanitizing, practicing social distancing. And also adhere to CDC guidelines," she said.

Most classes typically have roughly 25 students. How small they’ll be reduced to this year has yet to be determined.

"We’re not sure at this time," Morrison said. "We have to continue to wait to see what the CDC guidelines are and their recommendations and then we’ll make changes as we go."

Morrison says she believes leaders within the Lafayette Parish School System are on board and ready to do all they can to ensure everyone’s safety for the upcoming school year.

"I think our leaders and our schools want to keep everyone safe," she said. "We want to keep all our employees safe and so I think they’re on board with doing whatever we have to do to make that happen."

Morrison also stressed to me that any guidelines currently in place for the upcoming school year are subject to change at any point during the school year based on c-d-c guidelines.

LPSS will be holding a meeting next Wednesday where they will announce details of the full reopening plan for the 2021-2022 school year before it then is voted on by the school board.
