Lafayette - With the Pfizer booster shot now available to those who have received both initial shots, that begs the question - can you get the booster shot in a country different from where you received the first two shots?

The answer to that question is a little nuanced in that is really all depends.

"Each vaccine reparation has its own schedule that has been tested in clinical trials and that’s what physicians adhere to," said Ruth Ruprecht, a virologist at the New Iberia Research Center.

The scheduling of the vaccine varies country to country, but do the ingredients of a vaccine differ also? Ruprecht says no.

"The ingredients, the composition of the vaccine is identical," Ruprecht said. "It is composed of the messenger RNA that carries the genetic information for the initial strain of the SARS coronavirus two."

So while you have nothing to worry about in terms of differences between the vaccine across borders, she says you could run into trouble with trying to get your booster shot if you aren’t a citizen.

Ruprecht also says covid-19 or not, you should always visit the CDC's website before traveling abroad.

"Sometimes you need to know what other diseases could endanger your health," Ruprecht said. "For instance if you’re going to a country where malaria is a problem, you might have to take daily pills and you need to have the prescription filled and take the prescription with you."

When it comes to your covid-19 booster shot...If you know you’ll be traveling abroad...It’s best to get everything handled before hoping on a plane.

Do whatever it takes to get the booster shot and see if with the private physician, see what arrangements can be made for that shot to be given.

Why there is inherently nothing wrong with receiving your covid-19 booster shot in a different country in terms of potential side effects, you can still run into issues if you aren’t a resident of that country.

Federal regulators are likely to approve the covid-19 booster shot for vaccinated adults starting at least 6 months after the previous dose rather than the eight month gap previously announced.
