Lafayette, LA – Construction of the C. Middlebrook detention pond is underway, and work on the Camellia retention pond is progressing. Retention and detention ponds help improve drainage in the city and parish of Lafayette, an objective and promise made by Mayor-President Josh Guillory.

Both retention and detention ponds are designed to manage stormwater. Retention ponds, also called wet ponds, maintain water year-round and retain stormwater permanently. Detention ponds, also called dry ponds, temporarily store stormwater then slowly drain when water levels recede.

The C. Middlebrook detention pond, located near the intersection of Kaliste Saloom Road and Camellia Boulevard, will provide additional storage for stormwater that drains from a tributary of the Isaac Verot Coulee near Camellia, Comeaux High School, and Long Plantation Boulevard areas — areas that have experienced roadway flooding and occasional flooding of homes. The target date for completion of the Middlebrook detention pond is June 1, weather permitting.

The Camellia retention pond along Camellia Boulevard between Kaliste Saloom and Verot School Roads is being expanded. The pond was built to retain stormwater discharge, and the expansion will increase the size and storage capacity which will benefit Quail Hollow, Kings Haven, and Ashland Park Subdivisions and adjacent neighborhoods — areas that have experienced roadway flooding and occasional flooding of homes. The target date for completion is sometime mid-July, weather permitting.
