Carencro, LA - One couple finds themselves in a bind after receiving concerns from city officials that their new adult store may be violating a city ordinance.
"I think it's completely, overly broad. To back up just a hair, this is our third store. We’ve been in business for twenty plus trouble free years," said Michael Menard, co-owner of Crave Romance Boutique.
Menard says Carencro city officials informed them that they may be in violation of an obscenity ordinance after initially giving them clearance to open their second Crave Romance Boutique location. There is currently one other location in Lafayette.
"They back peddled after receiving a complaint that says we might be in violation of obscenity laws. We’ve looked at the obscenity statute, it’s incredibly broad," he said.
The ordinance prohibits the distribution of adult videos, literature and toys. Menard questions its enforcement after he visited several major retailers in Carencro and bought three hundred dollars worth of items he alleges are in violation of the obscenity ordinance. "They sell items that are exactly the items I plan to sell here. I’m not saying similar, some exact items I’m planning to sell here," Menard said.
Menard says they just want fairness. "We really just hope this works out. I believe Amazon should have the right. I believe Walgreens should have the right, I believe Wal-Mart should have the right and I certainly believe we should."
We reached out to Carencro city officials who declined to comment at this time.
Menard plans to meet with the city council Monday night to further discuss the alleged ordinance violation.
