Acadiana residents are seeing an increase in scammers calling and texting their phones for information. People have received hundreds of calls from scammers over the past month , leaving some frustrated and even wanting to change their number.
“What did I click on when I was on my computer? What did I put my phone number into? What are these people trying to get from me?” Kelly Brinkman Said.
Concerns are brewing , as people in Acadiana continue to block as many potential scam callers as possible.
”I'm getting facetimes from these numbers. I get them back-to-back. I have to turn my phone off to not disturb me because I can't really use my phone at that point.” Kelly Brinkman Said.
Better Business Bureau officials say that these scammers are originating from overseas looking for money and personal information.
“Apparently the 337, 318, 225 area codes are being targeted right now. If your number is on the list, you will probably get a phone call or a text message.” Chris Babin Said.
They’re encouraging everyone to pay attention to numbers that are unfamiliar.
“These scammers like to use our emotions against us, they will say anything and everything to get us invested into the conversation on either side of the scale. It could be a swept stake that you have won a new car. Don’t buy into those things.” Chris Babin Said.
Chris Babin with Better Business Bureau says if you are in this type of situation, don’t share your personal information in order to keep your identity safe.
