(KADN) Morgan City - Louisiana Department of Natural Resources spokesman Patrick Courreges tells News15 that on Sunday a natural gas well operated by Texas Petroleum Investment Company (TPIC) near Belle Isle in south St. Mary Parish was being sealed when a gas blowout happened.

TPIC called in Wild Well Control to contain the leak. WWC began work on the well Monday morning. On Tuesday during that operation, gas ignited causing an explosion. Courreges says at least four and possibly more workers were transported with burns to their hands and faces. Their condition is unknown, according to Courreges.

Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center has confirmed for News15 that at least one of those injured workers has been admitted to Lourdes.

According to an Acadian Ambulance Spokesperson, the company responded with four air ambulances and five ground units. Two patients were transported by air and another 2 by ground to area hospitals.

This is a developing story. We will provide more details once they become available.
