2020 was an eventful weather year across Acadiana. With that being said, let's go over Some of the extremes that we saw here in Lafayette during the year.
There was a wide gap between our coldest and warmest weather here in Lafayette. The coldest morning was on December 1st with a low of 30 degrees. August 15th was 68 degrees warmer though making for our hottest high of the year at 98 degrees!
As for actual weather events, tropical weather dominated the year. Our wettest day in Lafayette came on August 27th as Hurricane Laura made landfall. The city picked up 5.83” of rain that day. The overall windiest day came on October 9th with winds of 75 mph here in Lafayette. There were higher localized winds in a squall line that moved through in Mid-January and the highest winds came at 150 mph in the EF3 Tornado that moved through Church Point in May.
Lafayette recorded its 10th warmest year on record in 2020. This now makes 5 out of the last 6 years that have landed in the top 10 hottest years here. March was the second hottest on record; almost 8 degrees above normal and the mornings were the hottest ever by 1 full degree!
