Higher education response to COVID-19

Colleges are debating making it mandatory for students to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

The coronavirus outbreak became a major disruption to colleges and universities. Eric Maron says Covid had a big impact on universities but they're continuing to follow the guidelines provided by the CDC.

"Taking those recommendations have been very important and has led to the fact that we are now having so many classes in the semester that we're on campus as well as the hybrid and the remote classes"

Since January 4th of last year UL-Lafayette has reported over 800 positive cases. Maron says it's been difficult prioritizing safety while optimizing education but students and faculty have adapted well to the many changes.
"The students accepted it very quickly as did the faculty and the staff it was new for everybody and i think everybody rose to the challenges and realize that it's something they had to work together in order to succeed"

The decision to make vaccinations mandatory has been discussed but maron says UL-Lafayette won't be implementing it because the vaccine is provisional.

"The department of health cannot mandate that, so we'll be unable to mandate that as long as they are something that is provisional but if they do get elevated then that's something that we'll look at but it doesn't look like that's going to happen by the end of the year"
