The University of Houston softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to UL Lafayette Friday night in the NCAA Super Regional at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Despite a grand slam from freshman Jennifer Klinkert, in front of a stadium record 1,217 fans, Houston was unable to come away with the win in the best of three series.
Houston (53-10) moves to 2-8 all-time against the Ragin' Cajuns.
Louisiana-Lafayette got on the board first in the second inning with a home run from Melissa Verde.
But Houston responded in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases, Klinkert hit a grand slam to center field. It was the Chino, Calif., native's 15th home run this season and the third grand slam. Her home run total is the third most in Cougar single-season history.
In the back-and-forth game, UL Lafayette regained the lead in the fifth inning putting five runs on the board to take the 6-4 advantage. It would be just enough as the Ragin' Cajuns held on for the win.
Senior Angel Shamblin is now 35-4 this season. She recorded three strikeouts and walked four batters in seven innings of work. She also allowed six earned runs, the second most in her career. She gave up seven earned runs against Texas A&M in the NCAA Regional final in 2007.
The Cajuns recorded 10 hits in the game, the most by a Cougar opponent since UCF notched 11 hits in the C-USA Championship game on May 10. It's the fifth time this season that the Cougars have allowed at least 10 hits in a game. UH is 0-5 this season when allowing at least 10 hits.
The best of three series will continue Saturday at noon. If necessary a 3 p.m. game will be played. The winner of the Houston Super Regional will advance to the 2008 Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
