Odom, Benton Kicked off LSU Football Team

By Associated Press

Backup LSU linebacker Derrick Odom was charged with a misdemeanor Wednesday, accused of smashing a car window after a brawl at a nightclub last week. Soon afterward, coach Les Miles kicked Odom off the team.

Baton Rouge police say Odom faces one count of simple criminal damage to property. He was involved in a fight at The Varsity nightclub near LSU's campus early Friday, left the club and was caught on video when he returned an hour later and smashed an SUV window. A call to Odom's lawyer, Anthony Bertucci, wasn't immediately returned.

Miles said Odom was dismissed as was walk-on linebacker Jeremy Benton.

Odom and backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, who also was in the fight, were barred from practice this week. Perrilloux, meanwhile, will remain on the team but Miles says he will not play Saturday, when No. 3 LSU faces No. 17 Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

He said that decision was made because Perrilloux has missed the "lion's share" of practice this week.

Perrilloux wasn't charged in the brawl.

The Baton Rouge Police Department has concluded its investigation into a series of events and allegations occurring during the early morning hours of October 26th at or around The Varsity, 3353 Highland Road.

As a result of that investigation, one individual, DERRICK ODOM, 19, has been criminally charged. Odom was issued a Misdemeanor Summons today charging him with Simple Criminal Damage to Property.

A synopsis of the chronology of events is as follows:

INCIDENT ONE:

Just after 2:00am on the morning of October 26th a large fight occurred at The Varsity involving several individuals, both patrons and employees of the club. The fight appears to have started inside and spilled out onto the back parking lot. Police were called and responded to the scene. At that time several individuals were interviewed. There were conflicting statements about who started the fight. No one reported being injured and no one wished to file a complaint or press charges. The incident was documented but no further action was taken.

INCIDENT TWO:

A short time later police were dispatched back to The Varsity on a vehicle that was apparently damaged during the fight in the parking lot. A quarter panel on the vehicle was dented. This damage was documented but it was impossible to ascertain who damaged the car or how the damage occurred.

but at least one of the individuals rattled doors and appeared try to gain entry. One of the individuals also smashed the window of an SUV that was parked near the rear of the club. This act was captured on video by security cameras. Investigators believe, based upon the suspect’s clothing and build, that this individual was Derrick Odom and he was charged accordingly with Simple Criminal Damage to Property.

INCIDENT FOUR:

Much later, on the night of the 26th, nearly 24 hours after the original fight, an employee of The Varsity reported for the first time, to an off-duty officer, that he was leaving the Varsity when the original fight was going on, when a man he believed to be Ryan Perrilloux ran up and pointed a gun at him and his girlfriend. The man stated he and his girlfriend then ran away and escaped. Upon follow up investigation, the victim was unable to identify Ryan Perrilloux in a photo line up. Further, upon reviewing all available footage of the area taken from security cameras and city-installed crime cameras, investigators were unable to locate any visual evidence whatsoever to support this allegation. Finally, upon being subsequently contacted by investigators in an attempt to further clarify his story, the man advised he did not wish to speak to police any further and did not wish to purse the matter. His girlfriend, upon being contacted by investigators, also refused to make a statement or cooperate.

The investigation was conducted with the assistance of the LSU Police Department. Pending discovery of any new information or evidence, this investigation has been concluded and no additional arrests are expected.
