Mighty Lions Win State

Xavier Francis had 23 points and a tournament record 19 rebounds and Lafayette High made 15-of-18 free throws in the final quarter to take a 75-55 victory over H.L. Bourgeois in the Class 5A state championships.

The Mighty Lions (38-3), won their first-ever state title, trailed only once in the game at 2-0 and led by a 39-26 halftime margin.

H.L. Bourgeois, at No. 13 - the lowest seeded team in the entire Top 28 Tournament - used a 19-7 run in the first six minutes of the second half to cut the margin to one point at 46-45 on Nathaniel Singleton's baseline jumper.

Lafayette High, however, held the Braves to no points through almost half of the fourth quarter, and Francis hit the Lions' first three field goals in the final period. The Lions outscored the Braves 25-8 in the final quarter.

Francis set a Class 5A record for single-game rebounding, breaking the old mark of 18 set by Lester Earl of Glen Oaks against Rummel in 1996 and tied by Clarence Moore of South Lafourche against Salmen in 1998 and Tyrun Walker of Westgate against Ellender in 2007. His efforts also helped Lafayette High take a 53-35 rebound advantage.

Arsenio Francis added 18 points, Todd Young had 12 and Devin Figaro scored 10 for Lafayette High.

Tramel White had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Braves (25-12), who knocked off top-seeded Huntington 71-59 in Thursday's semifinals. Singleton came off the bench to score 14 points. Stevie Howard, who had a Class 5A tournament record 43 points in the Huntington game, was held to 10 points and had only one basket in the second half before fouling out in the final two minutes.
