WATCH THE RACE HERE!LSU's Richard Thompson ran a personal best 9.89 in the Olympics 100 meter dash final on Saturday, becoming the second-fastest man on Earth and winning the silver medal for Trinidad and Tobago. The NCAA champion finished behind a world-record performance by Jamaica's Usain Bolt (9.69).
Bolt, who broke his own world record (9.72 set in May 2008), actually slowed at the finish to celebrate his Olympics gold (
complete results). Thompson ran out of lane 5 in the final, between Bolt and bronze medal winner Walter Dix (9.91) of the USA. Thompson also edged Dix at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Thompson became first men's sprint medalist in school history to win a silver medal at the Olympics. Derrick Brew of the USA won bronze in the men's 400 meters in Athens, Greece, in 2004.
Thompson had the third-best time in the men's 100 meter semifinal round and outsed American Tyson Gay (10.04) to advance to the final.
In women's action, former Lady Tigers star Muna Lee advanced through the first two rounds of the women's 100 meters (
complete results).
Lee won her first round heat in 11.33 and easily finished second in her second round race (11.08), where the top 3 advance to Sunday's semifinal (6:53 a.m. CT). The women's 100 meter final will be held on Sunday at 9:25 a.m. CT.
Two other LSU athletes, Sherry Fletcher of Grenada and Kelly Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago, took part in the women's 100 meters. Fletcher finished fifth in heat 2 (11.65) and was .01 seconds from advancing to round 2.
Baptiste finished second in her heat (11.39), advancing to the second round where she was sixth in her heat (11.42).
In the semifinal round of the women's 800 meters, LSU's Neisha Bernard-Thomas (Grenada) finished 21st (2:01.84,

Former Tiger Isa Phillips (Jamaica) was fifth (48.85) in his semifinal heat of the men's 400 meter hurdles, one spot out of qualifying for the eight-man final (
complete results).
